Ensemble Per Sonare:
BOCCHERINI AND BEETHOVEN, 2 QUINTETS

This concert presented by ensemble Per Sonare juxtaposes two quintets. The first is the Quintet in C Major by Luigi Boccherini G.489 (for flute, violin, viola and two cellos), followed by the Quintet for Strings “Kreutzer” by Ludwig Van Beethoven.
The manuscript score and the nonautographed Boccherini quintet was found with 5 other quintets of the  same instrumentation, in the musical archives of the Palacio Real in Madrid, Spain. According to musicologists, the period, writing music, style and instrumentation perfectly match Boccherini’s, although the collection is not part of his cataloged works. As for Beethoven’s string quintet set out in our program, this is an extremely successful transcription, most likely done by Beethoven himself, after his own sonata “Kreutzer” for Violin. Beethoven rarely allowed others to make transcriptions of his music, and was known to have said that they were generally disappointing.
